Background
He joined Toray in April 1967 and became a Director 29 years later, in June 1996. He climbed three rungs in three years, to Managing Director in June 1998, Senior Managing Director in June 1999 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2001, and became President the following year. It took him 29 years from joining to the board and six years from the board to the presidency.
Selection
In June 2002 he succeeded Katsuhiko Hirai as President. He was promoted after one year as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. In the FY ended March 2002, the year before he took office, net income was ¥3.8 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥1,015.7 billion, just 0.4% of sales. Net income in the following FY ended March 2003 was also ¥5.7 billion, so profits stayed low in the two periods right after he took office.
Initiatives
During his tenure consolidated net sales grew 62% from ¥1,015.7 billion (FY ended March 2002) to ¥1,649.6 billion (FY ended March 2008). Operating income also rose from ¥81.1 billion in the FY ended March 2005 to ¥103.4 billion in the FY ended March 2008, and the workforce from 34,910 to 38,565. Results turned down from autumn 2008, and he stepped down after the company posted operating income of ¥36.0 billion and a net loss of ¥16.3 billion in the FY ended March 2009, and another net loss of ¥14.1 billion in the FY ended March 2010.
