Background
He joined Toray in April 1973 and became a Director in June 2002, 29 years after joining. He moved up every year or two, to Managing Director in June 2004, Senior Managing Director in June 2006 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2007, and became President in June 2010. His predecessor Sadayuki Sakakibara had also taken 29 years from joining to the board.

In the FY ended March 2010, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales fell 8% from the previous year to ¥1,359.6 billion, and the company posted a net loss of ¥14.1 billion, its second consecutive net loss. Operating income of ¥40.1 billion was also down 60% from ¥103.4 billion in the FY ended March 2008.
