Background

He is the founder, who became Representative Director and President on the establishment of Yamada Denki Co., Ltd. in September 1983. He stepped down as President in June 2008, April 2016 and April 2025, and returned himself in June 2013 and September 2021. As of the end of March 2026, the major shareholders were The Master Trust Bank of Japan with 11.3% and Tech Planning Co., Ltd. with 9.83%, while Noboru Yamada himself held 3.08% and the Noboru Yamada Memorial Foundation 2.36%. The founder still holds a personal stake.

Selection

He was the first president and had no predecessor. After stepping back to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO in June 2008, he returned as Representative Director, President and CEO in June 2013. He stepped back to Chairman again in April 2016, and in September 2021 took office for the third time as Representative Director, Chairman, President and CEO. Both returns accompanied the replacement of his successor, with the founder coming back to the front line of management.

Initiatives

During his first tenure, consolidated net sales grew from ¥793.8 billion in the FY ended March 2003 to ¥1,767.8 billion in the FY ended March 2008, with operating income reaching ¥65.4 billion. In his second tenure, net sales fell to ¥1,664.4 billion and operating income to ¥19.9 billion in the FY ended March 2015, and he launched a structural reform of the stores. In his third tenure, in September 2021, the company made Otsuka Kagu a wholly owned subsidiary. In the FY ended March 2025, his final year, net sales were ¥1,629.1 billion and operating income ¥42.8 billion.
