Background
He became a Director in July 1986, Managing Director in May 1987, and Senior Managing Director in May 1988. From April 1995 he served 13 years as Executive Vice President, becoming President in June 2008. On stepping down as President in June 2013 he returned to Representative Director and Executive Vice President, also heading the Sales Division from May 2014 and the Merchandise Division from December of that year, and in April 2016 became Representative Director, Vice Chairman and Representative Executive Officer and CEO.

In June 2008 he succeeded founder Noboru Yamada as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2008, the year before he took over, consolidated net sales were ¥1,767.8 billion and operating income ¥65.4 billion, sales having grown 38% in two years from ¥1,284.0 billion in the FY ended March 2006. The promotion came after 13 years as Executive Vice President. After he stepped down in June 2013, Yamada returned as President. The change does not appear to have marked the founder's withdrawal from management.
Initiatives
During his tenure, in the FY ended March 2011, the company posted consolidated net sales of ¥2,153.3 billion and operating income of ¥122.8 billion. In the FY ended March 2012 net sales were ¥1,835.5 billion and operating income ¥89.0 billion, and in the FY ended March 2013, his final year, ¥1,701.5 billion and ¥33.9 billion, a 72% drop in operating income over two years. Net income of ¥22.2 billion in the FY ended March 2013 was below the ¥49.2 billion of the year before he took over.
