Background

He joined Toho in April 1975 and became a Director 26 years later in May 2001. He rose to Managing Director in May 2005 and Senior Managing Director in May 2007, serving four years in that post before becoming President, 36 years after joining. After becoming President, he also became a Director of Hankyu Hanshin Holdings, the largest shareholder, in June 2015, and an outside Director of Fuji Media Holdings in June 2017.

Selection

In May 2011 he succeeded Hideyuki Takai as President. In the fiscal year ended February 2011, the year before he took over, consolidated operating revenue was ¥198.9 billion and operating income ¥22.4 billion, revenue having declined for two straight years from ¥213.4 billion in the FY ended February 2009. It was an internal promotion of a career employee who had served four years as Senior Managing Director, and appears to have been meant to put someone who knew the core exhibition and real estate businesses in charge.

Initiatives

Consolidated operating income rose from ¥22.4 billion in the FY ended February 2011, the year before he took over, to ¥52.9 billion in the FY ended February 2020. Scale also grew, from operating revenue of ¥198.9 billion in the FY ended February 2011 to net sales of ¥262.7 billion in the FY ended February 2020. Net sales fell to ¥191.9 billion and operating income to ¥22.4 billion in the FY ended February 2021, but recovered to ¥228.3 billion and ¥39.9 billion in the FY ended February 2022, his final year.
