Background
He graduated from Keio University in 1927 and became President of Matsuoka Kisen in December 1945. He joined Toho as a Director in March 1957, the same month he became President of Umeda Koma Stadium. In March 1958 he also became President of Shinjuku Koma Stadium, and after the two companies merged in August 1964 he served as President of Koma Stadium. He came onto the parent company's board from the side that ran theater operators, without working in studios or distribution. He was the second son of Ichizo Kobayashi, who founded Toho.
Selection
He became Representative Director and Chairman of Toho in September 1962, and four years later, in September 1966, moved from Chairman to President. His predecessor Masashi Shimizu moved to Chairman the same month and in February 1968 also became Chairman of Keihanshin Kyuko Railway (now Hankyu Corporation). Total revenue for the FY ended January 1967 was ¥16.511 billion and net income ¥1.04 billion, no decline from ¥16.156 billion and ¥1.021 billion the previous year. The change appears to have been not a turnaround but a handover of the parent company from a Hankyu-side executive to the founding family.
Initiatives
During his tenure, the heavy part of film production was moved outside the parent company. In November 1971, Senior Managing Director Sanezumi Fujimoto became President of Toho Eiga. Fujimoto, who founded Fujimoto Productions in 1950 and became a Toho Director in September 1955, had been in charge of production, and that role shifted to the subsidiary. In the FY ended January 1974, net sales were ¥29.5 billion, ordinary income ¥1.8 billion and net income ¥1.1 billion. He stepped down as President in August 1974, and Masashi Shimizu returned.
