Background

He graduated from Konan University in 1957 and joined Toho in April of that year. After serving as a Director of Towa from March 1967 and of Toho Real Estate from May 1968, he became a Director of Toho in March 1970. He rose to Managing Director in March 1973 and Executive Vice President in August 1974, became President of Toho International in April 1977, and President of the parent company the following month. His father was Tatsuro Matsuoka, president two terms before him, and he was a grandson of Ichizo Kobayashi, who founded Toho.

Education: Konan University, Faculty of Economics (1957)

Selection

In May 1977 he became President at age 42. Among the officers listed that year, Executive Vice President Masukichi Matsuoka had taken 22 years to become a Director after graduating from Kobe University of Commerce in 1933, and Misao Kaneko 20 years after graduating from Meiji University in 1938, whereas Isao Matsuoka became a Director 13 years after joining in 1957 and President after 20. His predecessor Masashi Shimizu stepped back to Senior Adviser the same month. In the FY ended February 1977, his first year, net sales were ¥42.3 billion and ordinary income ¥2.5 billion.

Initiatives

He served as President for 17 years, from May 1977 to 1994. In the FY ended February 1977, his first year, non-consolidated net sales were ¥42.3 billion and ordinary income ¥2.5 billion. In the FY ended February 1994, his final year, consolidated operating revenue was ¥165.2 billion, ordinary income ¥17.3 billion and net income ¥7.8 billion. Although non-consolidated and consolidated figures differ in scope, revenue appears to have grown nearly fourfold over this period.
