Background

He joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation in April 1978. He served as a Director of NTT Communications from June 2008 and its Representative Director and Executive Vice President from June 2012, and became Representative Director and Executive Vice President of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone in June 2014. He became Representative Director and President in June 2018. His management experience was at the core subsidiary handling international communications and corporate business.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Engineering (1978)

Selection

In June 2018 he succeeded Hiroo Unoura as President. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2018, consolidated revenue was ¥11,782.1 billion and operating profit ¥1,755.6 billion. About 60% of group operating profit came from NTT DOCOMO, but domestic mobile subscriptions had plateaued, and with government pressure to cut telecom charges, earnings were expected to taper off. DOCOMO's overseas mobile investments of ¥1.8 trillion in 1999-2000 had ended in complete withdrawal.

Initiatives

In November 2018 he created NTT, Inc. to oversee the scattered overseas businesses, moving NTT Communications, Dimension Data Holdings and others under it. In July 2019 NTT Limited was set up beneath it, placing the intermediate holding company outside the NTT Act and bringing foreign executives onto its board. In May 2019 the company announced IOWN, a vision for next-generation communications infrastructure based on photonics-electronics convergence technology. In September 2020 it launched a tender offer of about ¥4,250.0 billion in total for listed subsidiary NTT DOCOMO, making it a wholly owned subsidiary in December that year.
