Background
He joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation in April 1964. He served as a Director and head of the Tohoku Branch from June 1992 and a Director and head of the Group Companies Headquarters from July 1996. In June 1998, as Managing Director, he also headed the Group Companies Headquarters and the holding company preparation office, and in January 1999 moved to the holding company transition headquarters. NTT was reorganized into a pure holding company in July 1999, and Wada became Representative Director and Executive Vice President that same month. His career involved handling the practical work of the reorganization from the preparation stage.
Selection
In June 2002 he succeeded Junichiro Miyazu as President. In the previous year, 2001, NTT West had fallen into an operating loss, and NTT East and NTT Communications had also seen earnings deteriorate. At the end of August that year, the regular national convention of the NTT labor union accepted a plan to transfer about 110,000 people to regional outsourcing companies. Overseas, too, more than ¥500.0 billion in remaining goodwill from the roughly ¥600.0 billion acquisition of US-based Verio in spring 2000 had become subject to a valuation loss. The appointment appears to have assigned the Executive Vice President who had designed the holding company to the turnaround after the reorganization.
