He joined the company in April 1981. He served as a Director and head of the General Affairs and Personnel Department of NTT East from June 2011, Director and head of the General Affairs Division from June 2012, Managing Director from June 2015 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President from June 2018, and became Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer in June 2022. In January 2022, six months before he took office, NTT Communications and NTT COMWARE had moved under NTT DOCOMO, integrating the corporate business with mobile. Sawada became Representative Director and Chairman.
Initiatives
In June 2023, debate over amending the NTT Act began, triggered by the sale of government-held shares being raised as an option for funding defense. In April 2024 an amended NTT Act was enacted that abolished the obligation to disclose research and development results. The company made NTT DATA Group a wholly owned subsidiary, and the funds spent on bringing in DOCOMO and DATA reached about ¥6.6 trillion in total.
