Background

He joined Nippon Recruit Center (now Recruit Holdings) in April 1979 and served as Representative Director, President and COO of Recruit Cosmos (now Cosmos Initia) from June 2005. His connection with the Sagawa group began when he became an adviser to SG Realty in October 2010; he became its Representative Director and President in March 2011 and joined the holding company's board in June 2013. In March 2014, as Representative Director, he took charge of planning, international operations and business promotion. An outsider whose career lay in real estate and human resources, he had no experience in frontline delivery.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Economics (1979)

Selection

In March 2015 he became President as Eiichi Kuriwada stepped back from Chairman and President to Chairman. The promotion came one year and nine months after he joined the holding company's board, and one year after he became Representative Director. Kuriwada had been President of Sagawa Express since May 1992 and had sat at the top of the holding company since June 2006. The change handed the top post to an outsider with no frontline delivery background.

Initiatives

In June 2015 he set up SG Lawson as a joint venture with Lawson, and in March 2016 concluded a capital and business alliance with Hitachi Transport System. In November 2016 the company acquired a Vietnamese delivery company. In December 2017 it listed its shares on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Consolidated revenue rose from ¥943.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016 to ¥1,118.1 billion in the FY ended March 2019, and operating profit from ¥49.5 billion in the FY ended March 2017 to ¥70.4 billion. He stepped down as President in April 2019, handing over to Hideo Araki, President of Sagawa Express.
