Background
He is a career employee who joined NYK Line in April 1984. He became a Corporate Officer in April 2015, Managing Executive Officer in June 2020 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2021, and became Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2022. While it took him 38 years from joining to reach the board, only ten months passed between joining the board and becoming President.
Selection
In April 2023 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Hitoshi Nagasawa. In the fiscal year ended March 2023, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥2,616.0 billion and net income ¥1,012.5 billion, a second straight year of profit over ¥1 trillion. His predecessor Nagasawa moved to Chairman in the same month of April 2023. Promoted after ten months on the board, it appears to have been an appointment that changed generations at a time when profit was at its peak.
Initiatives
After he took office, consolidated net income was ¥228.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2024, ¥477.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2025 and ¥211.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2026, returning from the trillion-yen level of his predecessor's tenure. Revenue stayed above ¥2 trillion, at ¥2,387.2 billion, ¥2,588.7 billion and ¥2,423.7 billion. Operating income was ¥174.7 billion, ¥210.8 billion and ¥138.6 billion, and the gap between operating income and ordinary profit, which had widened to ¥813.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2023, narrowed to ¥72.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2026.
