Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in 1941, joined the company and served as General Manager of the First Sales Department from November 1965. In May 1969 he joined the board while remaining head of the First Sales Department, became Managing Director in May 1971 and Senior Managing Director in May 1975. He had led liner sales for eight years. He was from Oita Prefecture.

Selection

In June 1978, as Shojiro Kikuchi moved to Chairman, he moved up from Executive Vice President to President. When he became Executive Vice President in June 1976 he sat alongside Isamu Ginnai, Executive Vice President since 1971, but in the board list of the 1977 edition only one Executive Vice President remained. It took him nine years from joining the board to become President.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 1978, the year before he took office, revenue was only ¥407.6 billion and ordinary profit ¥4.3 billion, but by the fiscal year ended March 1982 revenue had grown to ¥628.9 billion and ordinary profit to ¥30.9 billion. In September 1978, three months after he took office, the company joined in establishing Nippon Cargo Airlines, with the four major shipping companies and All Nippon Airways each contributing 20%. From June 1979 he served as Chairman of the Japanese Shipowners' Association.
