Background

He joined NYK Line in April 1980 and built his entire career at the company. He became Director and Managing Corporate Officer in June 2011, 31 years after joining. He became Representative Director and Senior Managing Corporate Officer in April 2013 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President Corporate Officer in April 2018, and just before becoming President he was Executive Vice President Corporate Officer.

In June 2019 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Tadaaki Naito. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before he took office, the company posted a net loss of ¥44.5 billion on consolidated revenue of ¥1,829.3 billion, swinging into the red from net income of ¥20.1 billion the year before. He was promoted after six years as a Representative Director from April 2013.

Initiatives

Over his four years the level of consolidated results was transformed. In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2020, revenue was ¥1,668.3 billion and net income ¥31.1 billion, but in the fiscal year ended March 2022 revenue was ¥2,280.7 billion and net income ¥1,009.1 billion, and in the fiscal year ended March 2023 revenue was ¥2,616.0 billion and net income ¥1,012.5 billion, two straight years of net income over ¥1 trillion. Operating income in the fiscal year ended March 2023, however, was ¥296.4 billion, and the gap with ordinary profit of ¥1,109.8 billion came from non-operating items.
