Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1934, joined the company and made his career in sales. He became General Manager of Sales in 1955, Director and General Manager of Sales in 1959, Managing Director in January 1961 and Senior Managing Director in November 1965. He became a Director of Japan Container Transport in May 1967 and Executive Vice President that November. He was from Miyagi Prefecture.

Selection

In May 1971, as Yoshiya Ariyoshi moved to Chairman, he moved up from Executive Vice President to President. Ariyoshi became head of the shipowners' association that same month. Having sat on the board of Japan Container Transport since May 1967, he rose to President from the side responsible for the switch to container ships.

Initiatives

Revenue rose from ¥255.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1974 to ¥390.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1975, but fell to ¥375.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1976, with an ordinary loss of ¥1.5 billion. Spanning that loss-making year, he served as Chairman of the Japanese Shipowners' Association from May 1975. In June 1978 he stepped back to Chairman and handed the presidency to Executive Vice President Susumu Ono.
