Background

He joined Hankyu Corporation in April 1973, became a Director in June 2000 and Managing Director in June 2002. He became Representative Director and President of the company in June 2003, 30 years after joining. From April 2005 he served as Representative Director and President of the holding company Hankyu Holdings, and from October 2006 of Hankyu Hanshin Holdings. He is a career employee who worked only inside the railway company.

Selection

In June 2003 he became Representative Director and President of Hankyu Corporation, succeeding Taro Ohashi, three years after joining the board and one year after becoming Managing Director. After the move to a holding company structure in April 2005, he continued as Representative Director and President of the newly created Hankyu Holdings. Spanning the October 2006 integration with Hanshin Electric Railway, his presidency lasted about 14 years, until June 2017.

Initiatives

In April 2005 the company transferred all its businesses to a newly created Hankyu Corporation through a corporate split and became the pure holding company Hankyu Holdings. In October 2006 it made Hanshin Electric Railway a wholly owned subsidiary and changed its name to Hankyu Hanshin Holdings. Across the integration, consolidated revenue rose from ¥486.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥743.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2007, and ordinary profit from ¥54.1 billion to ¥74.9 billion. In his final year, the fiscal year ended March 2017, revenue was ¥736.8 billion and ordinary profit ¥100.6 billion.
