Background
He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1977 and moved to Central Japan Railway Company, launched in April 1987 in the breakup and privatization. His first executive role was in personnel, becoming Director and General Manager of Personnel in June 2002. He became Managing Director in June 2006 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2008, becoming President after six years as Executive Vice President. He belongs to nearly the last generation hired by JNR.
Selection
He became President in April 2014, succeeding Yoshiomi Yamada. In the fiscal year ended March 2014, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,652.5 billion and ordinary profit ¥404.3 billion, with ordinary profit up 1.5 times in two years from ¥263.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2012. The construction plan for the Chuo Shinkansen between Shinagawa and Nagoya was approved in October that year, and the change came with the start of maglev construction at hand.
Initiatives
In December 2014 construction of the Chuo Shinkansen between Shinagawa and Nagoya began. The company adopted a policy of covering the construction cost entirely at its own expense without relying on government funds, and in November 2016 received ¥3 trillion in long-term Fiscal Investment and Loan Program loans through the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency, securing funds while preserving its managerial independence. Over his four years consolidated revenue rose from ¥1,652.5 billion to ¥1,822.0 billion and ordinary profit from ¥404.3 billion to ¥583.6 billion.
