Background
He joined Central Japan Railway Company in April 1989, two years after the company's launch in April 1987, part of the generation that never worked at JNR. He became an Executive Officer in June 2016, Director and Executive Officer in June 2019 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2020, and became Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2022. He became President 34 years after joining, after one year as Executive Vice President.
Selection
He became President in April 2023, succeeding Shin Kaneko. In the fiscal year ended March 2023, the year before he took office, the company recovered from two straight years of losses to consolidated revenue of ¥1,400.2 billion and ordinary profit of ¥307.5 billion. Promoted just one year after becoming Executive Vice President, it was a change that handed the next generation to people who never knew JNR.
Initiatives
With the recovery in ridership, consolidated revenue for the fiscal year ended March 2026 was ¥2,006.2 billion and ordinary profit ¥780.9 billion, above the pre-pandemic fiscal year ended March 2020 (revenue ¥1,844.6 billion, ordinary profit ¥574.3 billion). On shareholder returns, he set out a policy of basing them on stable dividends while considering options as profit and cash flow grew, and began a stock split and share buybacks. The Chuo Shinkansen continues to be built using superconducting maglev, and construction of the Shizuoka section has not begun.
