Background

He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1978 and moved to Central Japan Railway Company, launched in April 1987 in the breakup and privatization. He became Director and General Manager of General Affairs in June 2004, then Managing Director in June 2008, Senior Managing Director in June 2010 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2012. Rising to the board from general affairs and administration, he became President after six years as Executive Vice President. He was the last President from the generation hired by JNR.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1978)

Selection

He became President in April 2018, succeeding Koei Tsuge. In the fiscal year ended March 2018, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,822.0 billion and ordinary profit ¥583.6 billion, with revenue and profit having risen throughout his predecessor's four years. Construction of the Chuo Shinkansen between Shinagawa and Nagoya was under way, and the company had just received ¥3 trillion in long-term loans from the Fiscal Investment and Loan Program. Promoted after six years as Executive Vice President, it appears to have been a change in line with the hierarchy.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2021, owing to COVID-19, consolidated revenue halved from ¥1,844.6 billion the year before to ¥823.5 billion, with an operating loss of ¥184.8 billion. The fiscal year ended March 2022 also brought a net loss of ¥51.9 billion, making two straight years in the red. Construction of the Chuo Shinkansen's Shizuoka section could not begin, and the planned 2027 opening could no longer be kept. In his final year, the fiscal year ended March 2023, revenue recovered to ¥1,400.2 billion and ordinary profit to ¥307.5 billion.
