Background

He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1981 and moved to West Japan Railway Company in the April 1987 breakup and privatization. He became an Executive Officer in June 2008, Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2012 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2016. After three and a half years as Executive Vice President, he became President 38 years after joining. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the major shareholders were led by The Master Trust Bank of Japan with 3.96%, with trust banks, banks and life insurers making up the top ten.

Selection

In December 2019 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Tatsuo Kijima. It was a year-end change at a time when executive moves were concentrated after the June annual shareholders' meeting. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, just before, consolidated revenue was ¥1,529.3 billion and operating income ¥196.9 billion. A little over three months after he took office the impact of COVID-19 spread, and in the fiscal year ended March 2021 revenue fell to ¥920.0 billion, with an operating loss of ¥245.5 billion and a net loss of ¥233.1 billion.

Initiatives

In 2021 the company carried out a public share offering, the first in the JR group. In 2022 it disclosed for the first time the income and expenditure of 30 line sections carrying fewer than 2,000 passengers per day, and called for talks with local governments along the lines. It set a plan to raise the life design segment's share of operating income to 40% in fiscal 2032 and announced share buybacks of about ¥100 billion. Consolidated revenue reached ¥1,707.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2025, above the pre-pandemic ¥1,529.3 billion of the fiscal year ended March 2019.
