Background

He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1978 and moved to West Japan Railway Company in the April 1987 breakup and privatization. He joined management in June 2006 as Executive Officer and General Manager of Personnel, became Managing Executive Officer in June 2009 and a Director in June 2010. From June 2012 he served as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. Whereas his predecessor Seiji Manabe joined management from the post of head of finance, his career started from head of personnel.

Education: Kyushu University, Faculty of Law (1978)

Selection

He became President in June 2016, succeeding Seiji Manabe. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,451.3 billion and operating income ¥181.5 billion, up in both from ¥1,350.3 billion and ¥139.8 billion the year before. Manabe moved to Chairman, and Kijima, Representative Director and Executive Vice President since June 2012, was promoted. It appears to have been not a change prompted by poor performance but a step up from the vice presidency to the next generation.

Initiatives

During his tenure consolidated revenue rose from ¥1,441.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2017 to ¥1,529.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2019, his last year. Operating income rose from ¥176.4 billion to ¥196.9 billion, ordinary profit from ¥160.8 billion to ¥183.3 billion and net income from ¥91.2 billion to ¥102.7 billion. Compared with the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took office, revenue was ¥78.0 billion higher and operating income ¥15.4 billion higher.
