Background

He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1976 and moved to West Japan Railway Company in the April 1987 breakup and privatization. He joined management in June 2003 as Executive Officer and General Manager of Finance, became Managing Executive Officer in June 2005 and a Director in June 2006. From June 2009 he served as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. His executive career started as head of finance, and he came up through finance rather than train operations or track maintenance.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law, Course 2 (1976)

Selection

He became President in May 2012, succeeding Takayuki Sasaki. In the fiscal year ended March 2012, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,287.6 billion and operating income ¥109.8 billion, up in both from ¥1,213.5 billion and ¥96.0 billion the year before. He was promoted after three years as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. It was a change made as results improved, and appears to have been one in which a finance executive simply took over the next generation.

Initiatives

His four years saw continued growth in revenue and profit. Consolidated revenue rose from ¥1,287.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2012, the year before he took office, to ¥1,451.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016, his last. Operating income rose from ¥109.8 billion to ¥181.5 billion, ordinary profit from ¥82.5 billion to ¥162.3 billion and net income from ¥29.4 billion to ¥85.8 billion. Revenue exceeded the previous year in all four years.
