Background

A career employee who joined Odakyu Electric Railway in April 1978, he worked only for the company until stepping down as President. He joined management in June 2008 as Director and General Manager of Corporate Planning, then became Managing Director in June 2013 and Senior Managing Director in June 2015. It took him 39 years from joining, and nine from joining the board, to become President. Odakyu's major shareholders are led by Dai-ichi Life Insurance with 6.43% and Nippon Life Insurance with 6.32%, followed by life insurers and trust banks, with no individuals in the top ten.

He became President in April 2017, succeeding Toshimitsu Yamaki. In the fiscal year ended March 2017, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥523.0 billion and operating income ¥49.9 billion, down in both from ¥529.8 billion and ¥52.9 billion the year before. Quadruple-tracking, under way since the urban planning decision of 1964, was on the verge of full completion in March 2018, and a Senior Managing Director from the corporate planning side was entrusted with the finishing phase.

Initiatives

In March 2018 quadruple-tracking was fully completed, half a century after the 1964 urban planning decision. In the fiscal year ended March 2021, hit by the spread of COVID-19, the company fell into the red with consolidated revenue of ¥385.9 billion, an operating loss of ¥24.2 billion and a net loss of ¥39.8 billion. The consolidated workforce fell from 14,019 in the fiscal year ended March 2020 to 11,661 in the fiscal year ended March 2024. In his final year, the fiscal year ended March 2024, revenue was ¥409.8 billion, operating income ¥50.8 billion and net income ¥81.5 billion, back to pre-pandemic levels.
