Background
He joined Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance in April 1983. He became Director and Managing Executive Officer of Nisshin Fire and Marine Insurance in June 2012, Executive Officer of Tokio Marine Holdings in April 2015, Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2018 and Senior Managing Director in June that year, and was appointed President in June 2019. His career took him through the management of a subsidiary before returning him to the core of the holding company.
Selection
In June 2019 he took over as Group CEO from Tsuyoshi Nagano. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before he took office, ordinary income was ¥5,476.7 billion, ordinary profit ¥416.3 billion and net income attributable to owners of the parent ¥274.5 billion.
Initiatives
In October 2019 the company raised fire insurance premiums across the board and also began considering risk-segmented fire insurance with premiums varying according to risks such as flooding. On May 20, 2024 it decided to reduce its strategic shareholdings, excluding unlisted shares and investments tied to capital and business alliances, to zero by the end of fiscal 2029. The plan was to halve the balance over the three years of the mid-term management plan, bringing it down to about 20% of consolidated net assets by the end of fiscal 2026, and to redirect the freed-up capital, after reviewing the risk portfolio, toward solving social issues and growth areas.
