Selection
He became President in 1947. The company had only just been formed in March 1944 through the merger of the old Tokio Marine, Meiji Fire and Mitsubishi Marine, with capital of ¥62 million. With the end of the war in August 1945 it lost its overseas assets and sales network, and a collapse in contracts, worsening loss ratios, the requisition of its head office building, purges from public office and the disposal of its prime shareholdings all came at once. Before the war it had held its assets in thirds in the US, the UK and Japan, but its British and American property, worth about ¥5 billion at the prices of the time, was confiscated.
Initiatives
Fire insurance rates were raised in 1947, and results improved against the backdrop of economic recovery. The company listed its shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in May 1949. In April 1950 it resumed foreign-currency cargo insurance, reviving reinsurance dealings with the London and New York markets. Direct overseas underwriting returned in the US in January 1956 and in Europe in May that year, and rebuilding the prewar sales network took more than a decade. At home it developed one new line after another, including credit insurance, workers' compensation insurance and liability insurance, and began selling compulsory automobile liability insurance in December 1955.
