Background

Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1922, he graduated from Kobe Higher Commercial School in 1941. In April 1957 he founded Daiei Yakuhin Kogyo in Nagata-ku, Kobe. The company was renamed Shufu no Mise Daiei in July 1962, and in August 1969 it merged Tokyo Daiei, Fukuoka Daiei and Shikoku Daiei, bringing their stores into the parent. It listed on the Second Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange in March 1971 and on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in March 1972. The 1974 edition of the Japanese corporate directory records that he became President in March 1968.

Education: Kobe Higher Commercial School (now University of Hyogo) (1941)

Selection

He was President of the company he himself founded and had no predecessor. The company went public in March 1971, 14 years after its founding. Of the senior managing and managing directors listed in the 1974 corporate directory, three had joined in 1969, become Directors or Managing Directors the following October 1970, and risen to Managing or Senior Managing Director by March 1973. In 1975 any approval over ¥100,000 required the President's seal, and the officers were called "carrier pigeons."

Initiatives

Against the business practice of manufacturers setting list prices, he pursued a policy of developing private brands to shift pricing power to retailers and consumers. Private brands reached 75% of clothing and 42% of household goods in the fiscal year ended February 1971. In the FY ended February 1978, non-consolidated net sales were ¥856.6 billion and ordinary profit ¥11.5 billion, an ordinary margin of 1.3%. As of May 1998 he was Chairman and President, and by April 1999 the presidency had passed to Tadasu Toba. The founder's 42-year tenure as President ended in that interval.
