Background

He joined JUSCO (now AEON) in March 1974. He became head of the Leasing Division in March 2001 and head of the Shopping Center Business Division in February 2002, advancing to Managing Executive Officer in May 2004 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in May 2006. He became Representative Director and President of AEON Retail in April 2008, and from April 2009 also served as CEO of the GMS business at AEON itself. He was an AEON business head who had come up through general merchandise stores and commercial facility development.

Selection

In May 2013 he succeeded Michio Kuwahara as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended February 2013, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥772.8 billion, with an ordinary loss of ¥3.7 billion and a net loss of ¥3.7 billion, the third straight year of net losses since the FY ended February 2011. In the FY ended February 2011 the major shareholders were AEON with 19.85%, Marubeni with 18.41% and Marubeni Retail Investment with 10.00%, a capital structure split between Marubeni and AEON. He was sent in while remaining an AEON Senior Managing Executive Officer.

Initiatives

In August 2013, three months after he took office, AEON launched a tender offer and Daiei became a consolidated subsidiary of AEON. In the fiscal year ended February 2014, his first, consolidated net sales were ¥756.5 billion, with an ordinary loss of ¥9.3 billion and a net loss of ¥24.3 billion, the net loss widening from ¥3.7 billion the year before. Annual securities reports ended with that year, and no later results were disclosed. He was the President who closed out the company's final year as a listed company.
