Background

He joined Marubeni in April 1972, became General Manager of the Automobile Department in April 1998 and acting head of the Transportation Machinery and Industrial Systems Division in April 2000. He became an Executive Officer in April 2002 and Managing Executive Officer in April 2004, also serving as President and CEO of Marubeni America Corporation. He became Executive Vice President in April 2008 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June that year. He was a trading company Executive Vice President who had come up through automobiles and transportation machinery and run the US subsidiary.

Selection

In May 2009, while still Representative Director and Executive Vice President of Marubeni, he joined Daiei as a corporate auditor; in April 2010 he became Acting President and Executive Officer, and the following May succeeded Toru Nishimi as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended February 2010, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥905.5 billion, with an ordinary loss of ¥4.7 billion and a net loss of ¥11.9 billion, a second straight year of net losses. At the end of the FY ended February 2011 the major shareholders were AEON with 19.85% and Marubeni with 18.41%, and he was the second consecutive President from Marubeni.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended February 2011, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥849.6 billion, with an ordinary loss of ¥1.1 billion and a net loss of ¥5.3 billion. In the FY ended February 2012 sales were ¥809.4 billion and ordinary results returned to a ¥0.4 billion profit, but the net loss widened to ¥11.4 billion. In the FY ended February 2013 sales were ¥772.8 billion, with an ordinary loss of ¥3.7 billion and a net loss of ¥3.7 billion, sales having fallen ¥132.7 billion from the year before he took office. He stepped down as President in May 2013.
