Background

He joined Marubeni in April 1972. He became Executive Vice President of Marubeni America Corporation in January 2001 and its Executive Vice President and COO in January 2003, and in April 2003, as Executive Officer and deputy regional head for the Americas, also ran Marubeni Canada. From April 2004, as head of the Finance and Logistics Division, he oversaw the Steel Products Department and the Business Incubation Department, and he became Managing Executive Officer in April 2005. He was a trading company officer who had run Americas operating companies and worked in finance and logistics, with no retail career on record.

Selection

He joined Daiei as Executive Vice President in September 2006 and the following month succeeded Yasuyuki Higuchi as Representative Director and President. At the end of the fiscal year ended February 2006 the major shareholders were the Industrial Revitalization Corporation of Japan with 66.67%, Marubeni Retail Investment with 10.02% and Marubeni Foods Investment with 1.75%. Like his predecessor he was brought in from outside, but he came from the sponsor Marubeni, and the change came as the company moved from public management to a rebuild led by its investors.

Initiatives

In March 2007 the company concluded a capital and business alliance with AEON and Marubeni, with AEON becoming a leading shareholder. In the fiscal year ended February 2008, consolidated net sales were ¥972.3 billion, ordinary profit ¥8.6 billion and net income ¥40.2 billion, with sales falling below ¥1 trillion from ¥1,047.0 billion the year before. In the FY ended February 2010, sales were ¥905.5 billion with an ordinary loss of ¥4.7 billion and a net loss of ¥11.9 billion, so his final year ended in the red. By the end of the FY ended February 2011, AEON held 19.85% and Marubeni 18.41%.
