Background

He joined Matsushita Electric Industrial in April 1980, moved to Boston Consulting Group in April 1992 and to Apple Computer in July 1994. He joined Compaq Computer in July 1997, became a vice president at its US headquarters in June 2000 and Director and head of its consumer business in October that year. He became an Executive Officer of Hewlett-Packard Japan in November 2002 and its Representative Director and President in May 2003. He was an executive who had run foreign-owned IT equipment companies, with no retail career on record.

In May 2005 he moved from Representative Director and President of Hewlett-Packard Japan to Representative Director, President and COO of Daiei. In the fiscal year ended February 2005, just before he took office, the company posted a net loss of ¥511.2 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥1,592.7 billion, and at the end of the FY ended February 2006 its major shareholders were the Industrial Revitalization Corporation of Japan with 66.67% and Marubeni Retail Investment with 10.02%. Under a public body holding two-thirds of the voting rights, the change brought in an outside manager with no retail experience.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended February 2006, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥1,431.5 billion and ordinary profit ¥24.3 billion, while net income jumped to ¥413.2 billion. Sales were ¥161.2 billion below the prior year's ¥1,592.7 billion, a profit achieved while shrinking stores and businesses. In the following FY ended February 2007, sales fell to ¥1,047.0 billion. He stepped down as President in October 2006, ending a tenure of one year and five months.
