In December 1984 he succeeded Toshio Kotaka as Representative Director and President, right after the absorption of Telmec in February of that year and the move to the First Section of the TSE in March. Net sales grew to ¥150.1 billion in the fiscal year ended September 1985, then fell to ¥84.3 billion in the FY ended September 1986 in the semiconductor slump, and operating income went into the red for the first time since the company's founding. In October 1986 he resigned as President, and Toshio Kotaka returned. Kotaka explained that Yoshida had offered to resign to take responsibility for the poor results, but there is also testimony that a motion to dismiss him was raised at an emergency board meeting in August.
