Background

He went to the United States a week after joining and at the end of May 1964 began importing and selling Thermco diffusion furnaces. In October of that year he beat out general trading companies to become the sole agent for Fairchild, and in Japan, where many doubted ICs would become practical, he accompanied the development heads of NEC, Hitachi, Toshiba and Fujitsu on tours of Fairchild's IC plant. In the September 1974 company newsletter he reported that the company had delivered about 180 large testers in Japan and held the top share of the Japanese market.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Engineering (1959)

Selection

It was Toshio Kotaka, then Senior Managing Director, who in the December 1974 company newsletter announced the scaling back and closure of unprofitable divisions and listed seven criteria for choosing the products the company would handle. Net sales were ¥31.2 billion in the fiscal year ended September 1979, when the withdrawal from exports was completed, and grew to ¥44.5 billion in the FY ended September 1980, and in June 1980 the company listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In December of that year he succeeded Tokuo Kubo as President.

Initiatives

In 1983 the company built its first own factory in Kumamoto. In February 1984 it absorbed the IC production equipment maker Telmec, and in March of that year moved up to the First Section of the TSE. With the promotion it asked that its industry classification be changed from trading company to electrical equipment, but this was not granted. Building its own factory, the merger and the First Section listing were all means of attracting engineers. In October 1986, when Minoru Yoshida stepped down as President citing poor results, Kotaka returned as President to succeed him. In February 1988 the company acquired all shares of Tel-Thermco.
