Background
He joined the company in April 1984 and served as Business Unit General Manager for single-wafer deposition from April 2002 and for thermal processing systems from April 2005. He became an Executive Officer in April 2003, deputy head of the SPE-3 division in April 2006 and a Director in June 2007, rising to President after a series of posts leading the deposition equipment business.
Selection
In April 2009 he succeeded Kiyoshi Sato as President. The Lehman shock had cut consolidated net sales by 44%, from ¥906.0 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2008 to ¥508.0 billion in the FY ended March 2009, and operating income from ¥168.5 billion to ¥14.7 billion. When he took office the chief executive was Chairman Tetsuro Higashi, and Hiroshi Takenaka added the CEO role in April 2010.
Initiatives
As a source of revenue outside semiconductors, in 2009 the company signed a distribution agreement with Oerlikon Solar of Switzerland and began selling integrated production lines for thin-film silicon solar panels, and in 2012 it acquired the company. Consolidated net sales recovered to ¥668.7 billion with operating income of ¥97.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2011, but fell to ¥497.2 billion with operating income of ¥12.5 billion in the FY ended March 2013.
