Background

He joined Toyota Motor Sales in April 1970 and from January 1996 was seconded at general manager level to Toyota's subsidiary in Australia. In January 2001 he moved to Toyota Tsusho as a senior staff officer, becoming a Director in June of that year, Managing Director in June 2002 and Senior Managing Director in June 2004. He was not a career employee of the trading company but came from Toyota's sales company.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Law (1970)

Selection

In June 2005 he rose from Senior Managing Director to President. Toyota Tsusho had merged with Kasho in April 2000 and in November of that year took over part of the steel sales operations from a Tomen subsidiary. At the time 70% of its earnings were automotive-related, and its long-standing goal was a 50-50 split between automotive and non-automotive. A man who had been at Toyota Tsusho for four and a half years became the top executive in charge of carrying out the next merger.

Initiatives

In April 2006 the company merged with Tomen, which was undergoing restructuring, expanding its scale as a general trading company. In announcing the merger, Shimizu avoided the term general trading company and held to a self-definition as the company handling Toyota's supply lines. Consolidated net sales, ¥3,315.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2005 before the merger, grew to ¥6,212.7 billion in the FY ended March 2007 after it.
