Background
He joined Toyota Tsusho in April 1983 and, after key posts on the ground in Africa, became an Executive Officer in June 2011. He became a Managing Executive Officer in April 2015, Managing Director in June 2016 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2017. He was a career employee who gained hands-on experience in Africa, and the Africa Division later became the company's largest business unit, accounting for about 20% of company-wide net income.
Selection
In 2018 he rose from Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer to succeed Jun Karube as President. On taking office Kashitani said, "We are not aiming to be a general trading company." In the fiscal year ended March 2018, the year before he took office, profit was ¥130.2 billion, having recovered within two years from the ¥43.7 billion loss of the FY ended March 2016.
Initiatives
The company invested about ¥26.0 billion in an Australian lithium resources company, aiming to take responsibility for supplying raw materials needed for electrification. In Africa, under the slogan of producing vehicles locally for local riders, it expanded into local assembly and sales in South Africa and Egypt, shopping malls with France's Carrefour, and the operation of 125 wind turbines in Egypt. In August 2022 it made Eurus Energy Holdings a wholly owned subsidiary, bringing the renewable energy business into its consolidated results, and in January 2025 also made Elematec wholly owned.
