Background
He joined Toyota Tsusho in April 1976. He became a Director in June 2004, an Executive Officer in April 2006 and a Managing Executive Officer in June 2008, becoming President 35 years after joining. Whereas his predecessor Junzo Shimizu had come over from Toyota Motor Sales, he was a career employee raised within the company. He became an Executive Officer in 2006, the year Toyota Tsusho reached the scale of a general trading company through its merger with Tomen.
Selection
In June 2011 he rose from Managing Executive Officer to succeed Junzo Shimizu as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥5,743.6 billion and net income ¥47.1 billion, partway through a recovery from ¥27.3 billion in the FY ended March 2010. Toyota Motor held 21.57% and Toyota Industries 11.12% of the shares, and career employees continued as President under the Toyota Group's ownership.
Initiatives
In January 2012 the company acquired additional shares in Eurus Energy Holdings, entering wind power in earnest, and in March it brought Elematec under its umbrella. In December of that year it acquired CFAO SAS, a major African distributor listed in Paris, for about €2.3 billion, or ¥234.5 billion. In December 2016 it made CFAO a wholly owned subsidiary. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, falling resource prices led to extraordinary losses of ¥92.7 billion and a net loss of ¥43.7 billion.
