Background
He joined HOYA in April 1985, and rose to Director in June 1993, Managing Director in June 1997 and Senior Managing Director in June 1999, reaching Senior Managing Director in 15 years. He is the eldest son of Tetsuo Suzuki, who became President in 1957. He became Representative Executive Officer and CEO in June 2003 and led the company for 22 years in total.
Selection
In June 2000, Mamoru Yamanaka stepped back to Chairman and Senior Managing Director Hiroshi Suzuki succeeded him. In the fiscal year ended March 2000, consolidated net sales were ¥201.1 billion and net income ¥20.7 billion, higher profit than the ¥201.2 billion and ¥17.8 billion of the year before. The change came while results were growing.
Initiatives
In June 2003 he became Representative Executive Officer and CEO, moving to a structure in which executive officers run the business. In 2007 HOYA acquired Pentax, bringing in its camera business and later making it the foundation of the medical endoscope business. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥201.1 billion when he took office to ¥661.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2022, and operating income from ¥84.9 billion in the FY ended March 2005 to ¥210.7 billion. In March 2022 he handed the CEO post to Eiichiro Ikeda.
