He joined Hoya Glass in 1965 and rose to Director in December 1983, Managing Director in December 1987, Senior Managing Director in June 1989 and Executive Vice President in June 1991, climbing internally over 26 years. In the register of major shareholders for September 1974, Mamoru Yamanaka appeared with 2.6%, after founder Shigeru Yamanaka's 4.1%, and he still held 2.07% in the fiscal year ended March 2006. As a member of the founding family, he also remained a shareholder.

In June 1993, Tetsuo Suzuki, President since 1970, stepped back to Chairman, and Executive Vice President Mamoru Yamanaka succeeded him. In the fiscal year ended March 1993, consolidated net sales were ¥139.7 billion and net income ¥5.29 billion, down from ¥141.7 billion and ¥7.84 billion the year before. Amid falling sales and profits, an Executive Vice President from the founding family was promoted.
