Background
He joined Shimadzu Corporation in April 1983 and became an Executive Officer in June 2014. He rose to Managing Executive Officer in June 2017, Director in June 2020 and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2021, and became Representative Director, President and CEO in April 2022. While it took him 39 years from joining to become President, only two years had passed since he joined the board. He was another appointment from among the parent company's career employees, following his predecessor Teruhisa Ueda and Akira Nakamoto before him.
Selection
In April 2022 he succeeded Teruhisa Ueda as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2022, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥428.2 billion and operating income ¥63.8 billion, both above the ¥393.5 billion and ¥49.7 billion of the year before. The promotion came two years after he joined the board and one year after he became Senior Managing Executive Officer. The change came while results were growing, and the appointment appears to have sought continuity rather than a change of course.
Initiatives
In 2022, the year he took office, the company acquired Nissui Pharmaceutical through a tender offer, entering the field of in vitro diagnostics and clinical testing. During his tenure, consolidated net sales grew from ¥482.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2023 to ¥560.7 billion in the FY ended March 2026, and operating income went from ¥68.2 billion to ¥73.7 billion. Net income fell to ¥53.8 billion in the FY ended March 2025, then recovered to ¥60.5 billion in the FY ended March 2026.
