Background

He joined Shimadzu Corporation in April 1982, became an Executive Officer in June 2007 and a Director in June 2011. After serving as Managing Executive Officer from June 2013 and Senior Managing Executive Officer from June 2014, he became Representative Director, President and CEO in June 2015. It took him 33 years from joining to become President, climbing the executive ladder in the eight years after becoming an Executive Officer. Like his predecessor Akira Nakamoto, he was a career employee of the parent company, and no individuals appear among the major shareholders.

Education: Kyoto University, Graduate School of Engineering (1982)

Selection

In June 2015 he succeeded Akira Nakamoto as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥314.7 billion, operating income ¥27.2 billion and net income ¥18.4 billion, all above the ¥307.5 billion, ¥24.0 billion and ¥9.7 billion of the year before. The promotion came one year after he became Senior Managing Executive Officer. Taking over after his predecessor had restored results, the appointment appears to have sought continuity of course.

Initiatives

Over his seven years, consolidated net sales grew from ¥342.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016 to ¥428.2 billion in the FY ended March 2022, and operating income from ¥35.7 billion to ¥63.8 billion. Net income also rose from ¥23.9 billion to ¥47.3 billion. In the FY ended March 2020, net sales of ¥385.4 billion and operating income of ¥41.8 billion fell short of the ¥391.2 billion and ¥44.5 billion of the year before, but recovered to ¥393.5 billion and ¥49.7 billion in the following FY ended March 2021. The FY ended March 2022, the year he stepped down, brought the highest sales and profits of his tenure.
