Background

He joined Shimadzu Corporation in April 1969 and became a Director in June 2001. He rose to Managing Director in June 2005 and Senior Managing Director in June 2007, and became Representative Director and President in June 2009. It took 40 years from joining to become President, and eight years from joining the board. The top shareholders were trust banks and life insurers, with no individual shareholders among them. His was the promotion of a career employee with no shareholding behind him.

In June 2009 he succeeded Shigehiko Hattori as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥272.8 billion and operating income ¥19.6 billion, a turn to lower sales and profits from ¥290.0 billion and ¥27.6 billion the year before. In the FY ended March 2010, his first year, net sales fell to ¥238.3 billion and operating income to ¥10.3 billion, the lowest levels of his tenure. The change came two years after he became Senior Managing Director, a promotion in line with the internal pecking order.

Initiatives

After falling to ¥238.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2010, his first year, consolidated net sales climbed into the ¥300 billion range at ¥307.5 billion in the FY ended March 2014 and reached ¥314.7 billion in the FY ended March 2015, the year he stepped down. Over the same period operating income recovered from ¥10.3 billion to ¥27.2 billion and net income from ¥6.1 billion to ¥18.4 billion. The shareholder structure, led by trust banks and Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, stayed the same throughout his tenure, and no individual shareholders ranked near the top in either the FY ended March 2011 or March 2015.
