Background

In July 1967 he opened the Western-style restaurant "Saizeriya" as a sole proprietor, and in May 1973 established Mariane Shokai. He became Representative Director and President at its founding and served 36 years until stepping back to Representative Director and Chairman in April 2009. As founder he also had capital backing: in the fiscal year ended August 2009, the largest shareholder was Yasuhiko Shogaki personally with 30.51%, with Kunio Shogaki eighth at 1.71%. In the FY ended August 2005, four years before he stepped down, his stake was the same 30.51%.

Education: Tokyo University of Science, Faculty of Science, Physics (1968)

Selection

He was the founder and had no predecessor. Six years after opening a single Western-style restaurant in July 1967, he established Mariane Shokai in May 1973 and became its Representative Director and President himself. For the next 36 years there was no change until he handed the presidency to Issei Horino in April 2009. Horino had joined in April 2000 and become a Director that November, and Shogaki passed the presidency to someone outside the founding family.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended August 2001, the first with consolidated disclosure, net sales were ¥51.8 billion and net income ¥4.64 billion. In the FY ended August 2003, ordinary income halved from ¥9.5 billion the year before to ¥4.5 billion, and net income fell from ¥5.55 billion to ¥2.26 billion. Results recovered to net sales of ¥74.6 billion and operating income of ¥4.4 billion in the FY ended August 2005, and ¥82.8 billion and ¥7.4 billion in the FY ended August 2007. In the FY ended August 2009, which included his departure in April 2009, the company posted an ordinary loss of ¥6.9 billion and a net loss of ¥4.8 billion against operating income of ¥9.2 billion.
