Background
In September 1980 he established Just Co. in Suginami, Tokyo, with capital of ¥3 million to wholesale and retail daily sundries. He became its Representative Director and President, and also served as Representative Director and President of Leader Co., which he founded in September 1983, and Anryu Shoji, founded in October 1997. Among the major shareholders for the fiscal year ended June 2006, he himself ranked first with 17.43%, followed by La Mancha at 12.62%, Anryu Shoji at 5.38% and the Yasuda Scholarship Foundation at 2.52%. Even in the FY ended June 2011 he held 14.11%, La Mancha 11.68% and the Yasuda Scholarship Foundation 5.18%. He runs the company with the capital backing of a founder.
Selection
In September 2005 he had moved to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, handing the presidency to Junji Narusawa. In April 2013, as Representative Director, Chairman, President and CEO, he took on the presidency again for the first time in seven years and seven months. In the fiscal year ended June 2013, the year of his return, consolidated net sales were ¥568.4 billion and operating income ¥32.4 billion, higher sales and profits than the ¥540.3 billion and ¥29.3 billion of the year before. In April that year the company subscribed to a third-party allotment by GEARTH (now Japan Asset Marketing), making it and its three subsidiaries subsidiaries. It appears the change was not about deteriorating results but about the founder personally taking charge of a reshuffle expanding into real estate and overseas.
Initiatives
In March 1989 he opened Don Quijote Fuchu in Fuchu, Tokyo, as the first store, changing the main line of business from wholesale to retail. In March 1998 the store count reached ten with the opening of the Kasai and Kanpachi Setagaya stores, as the chain kept expanding within Tokyo. In June that year the company listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, moving to the First Section in July 2000. In 2013, the year he returned as President, it established the overseas holding company Pan Pacific International Holdings Pte. Ltd. in Singapore in July, and in September acquired all shares of MARUKAI CORPORATION, which operates stores in North America and Hawaii.
