Background

He joined Nine Mart Narusawa in July 1984 and moved to Don Quijote in November 1992. He served as manager of the Suginami store from November 1993 and head of the Sales Division from May 1995, handling the practical work of stores and sales. He became Director and head of the First Sales Division in September 1995 and Executive Vice President in charge of overall sales in January 2005, rising to President while still overseeing sales. As of the fiscal year ended June 2012 he held 16.7 thousand shares, orders of magnitude fewer than the 10,872.0 thousand held by founder Takao Yasuda in the same year.

Selection

In September 2005, as Takao Yasuda moved to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, he became Representative Director, President and COO, eight months after his appointment as Executive Vice President in charge of overall sales. At Don Quijote, the path from joining to the board is short: Narusawa became a Director two years and ten months after joining in November 1992, Koji Ohara two years and seven months after joining in February 1993, and Mitsuo Takahashi two months after joining in July 1997. The change followed this pattern of quickly promoting people handling the practical work of sales to the board.

Initiatives

Consolidated net sales grew from ¥232.8 billion in the fiscal year ended June 2005 to ¥568.4 billion in the FY ended June 2013, and operating income from ¥11.9 billion in the FY ended June 2006 to ¥32.4 billion. In February 2006 the company acquired all shares of THE DAI'EI (USA), INC. (now Don Quijote (USA) Co., Ltd.) and Oriental Seafoods, Inc. from Daiei. In January 2007 it acquired Doit and its subsidiaries, and in October that year acquired Nagasakiya and seven subsidiaries, bringing the group to 200 stores. In October 2009 it began selling its private brand "Jonetsu Kakaku."
