Background

He joined Kuraya Yakuhin in October 1971 and became a Director four years later, in October 1975. He rose to Managing Director in December 1978 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in December 1980, and in April 1989, at 45, became Representative Director and President of Kuraya Yakuhin. He led the company for 11 years until moving in April 2000 to become Representative Director and Executive Vice President of the new company formed by a three-way merger. In the list of major shareholders for the fiscal year ended March 2006, he was the only individual, ranking tenth with 1.41%.

Selection

In June 2002 he was promoted from Representative Director and Executive Vice President to Representative Director and President. He had joined the April 2000 three-way merger as President of Kuraya Yakuhin and spent a little over two years as Executive Vice President after the integration before the promotion. In the shareholder structure for the fiscal year ended March 2006, Takeda Pharmaceutical ranked first with 8.74% and Astellas Pharma held 2.64%, with drugmakers that were the company's suppliers near the top.

Initiatives

In 2005 he made Paltac, the largest wholesaler of daily goods, a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange, placing pharmaceutical wholesaling and daily goods wholesaling side by side. In 2009 the pharmaceutical wholesale business was transferred through a company split, and the company became a pure holding company. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,921.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥2,750.2 billion in the FY ended March 2012, the year he stepped down. Net income was only ¥2.0 billion in the FY ended March 2010 and ¥1.7 billion in the FY ended March 2011.
