Background

He joined in August 1979, became a Director 11 years later in December 1990 and Managing Director in December 1994. From April 2004 he also served as Representative Director and President of subsidiary Mediceo, running the wholesale front lines for eight years. On the holding company side he rose to Senior Managing Director in June 2008 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2011, and became President the following year. His name does not appear among the top 10 shareholders in either the fiscal year ended March 2006 or March 2010, making his a career employee's promotion without capital behind it.

Selection

In April 2012 he succeeded Sadatake Kumakura as President. Profits had been thin toward the end of his predecessor's tenure: in the fiscal year ended March 2011, operating income was only ¥13.5 billion and net income ¥1.7 billion on consolidated sales of ¥2,662.8 billion. The change came just as operating income recovered to ¥20.9 billion and net income to ¥11.6 billion in the FY ended March 2012, the year before he took office. His eight years leading the subsidiary Mediceo appear to have been the grounds for entrusting him with running the holding company.

Initiatives

Over his 14 years in office, consolidated sales grew from ¥2,750.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2012 to ¥3,817.4 billion in the FY ended March 2026, and operating income from ¥20.9 billion to ¥53.2 billion. In the FY ended March 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, operating income fell to ¥38.6 billion and net income to ¥23.9 billion, but from the FY ended March 2024 sales kept rising, to ¥3,558.7 billion, ¥3,671.3 billion and ¥3,817.4 billion, and in the FY ended March 2026 the company posted ordinary income of ¥75.7 billion and net income of ¥42.5 billion.
