Background
He joined Fuji Heavy Industries in April 1970 and became an Executive Officer in June 2002 as head of the Europe region and the Asia and Oceania region in the Subaru Sales Division. He came up through overseas sales, as head of the Subaru Parts and Accessories Division from June 2004 and as Managing Executive Officer and head of the Subaru Overseas Sales Division from April 2005, rising to Senior Managing Executive Officer and head of the Subaru Overseas Sales Division in June 2006. His shareholding listed in the annual securities report was 39,000 shares, and he had never served as a director before becoming President.
Selection
In June 2006, the same month he rose to Senior Managing Executive Officer and head of the Subaru Overseas Sales Division, he became Representative Director and President. He moved from executive officer to President without passing through the board, unlike Kazushige Okuhara, who joined in the same April 1970 and went step by step to Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and head of personnel in June 2006 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2010. In the fiscal year ended March 2006, which he inherited from his predecessor Kyoji Takenaka, consolidated net sales were ¥1,476.3 billion and operating income ¥58.3 billion.

In 2008 the company accepted an investment from Toyota Motor, and at the end of the fiscal year ended March 2010 Toyota was the largest shareholder with 16.48%. Consolidated net sales fell to ¥1,445.7 billion in the FY ended March 2009, with an operating loss of ¥5.8 billion and a net loss of ¥69.9 billion. Operating income recovered to ¥27.4 billion in the FY ended March 2010, and in the FY ended March 2011, just before he stepped down, the company posted net sales of ¥1,580.5 billion, operating income of ¥84.1 billion and net income of ¥50.3 billion.
