Background

He graduated from Kyoto Imperial University's Faculty of Engineering in March 1937 and joined Nissan Motor, becoming a Director in May 1960, Managing Director in November 1964, Senior Managing Director in November 1969 and Executive Vice President of the company in November 1973. He had been involved with Fuji Heavy Industries as a part-time Director since May 1971. An engineer, he spent 41 years at Nissan Motor, 18 of them as an officer.

Selection

In October 1978, Eiichi Ohara moved to Chairman and Sasaki, Executive Vice President of Nissan Motor, became President. The two companies had concluded a business alliance in October 1968, and Nissan's stake had risen from 3.08% in March 1970 to 8.24% in March 1975, making it the second-largest shareholder. Sasaki had served as a part-time Director of Fuji Heavy Industries since May 1971. In June the following year, 1979, Isamu Kawai, a Managing Director of Nissan, also joined the board.

Initiatives

In 1979 the company improved the four-wheel-drive Leone and captured demand in snowy and mountainous regions, and in fiscal 1980 took 38.5% of unit sales in the domestic 4WD market, beating Toyota Motor and Suzuki for first place. In February 1983 the Oizumi plant of the Gunma Manufacturing Division began operations. Net sales grew from ¥327.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1979 to ¥602.7 billion in the FY ended March 1984, and ordinary income from ¥9.1 billion to ¥28.4 billion.
