Background

He graduated from Tokyo Imperial University's Faculty of Law in 1933, served as a Director of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation from August 1952 and its Vice President from September 1958, and retired in September 1962. In May the following year, 1963, he was brought in as Representative Director and President of Fuji Heavy Industries. A law graduate who had run an organization in the state-owned telecom business came in from outside to a company whose management was mostly engineers from the former Nakajima Aircraft.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law (1933)

Selection

In May 1963, Nobuo Yokota joined Fuji Heavy Industries as President together with Eiichi Ohara, a Managing Director of the Industrial Bank of Japan, as Executive Vice President. His predecessor Takao Yoshida stepped back to Director the same month. IBJ was the largest shareholder, with 10.0% as of March 1961 and 9.7% as of March 1963. Bringing in both the President and the Executive Vice President from outside, the appointment appears to have been the main bank reshaping the management team.

Initiatives

In October 1968 the company concluded a business alliance with Nissan Motor. In February 1969 the Yajima plant of the Gunma Manufacturing Division began operations, completing facilities for mass-producing passenger cars. Net sales grew from ¥30.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1963 to ¥97.6 billion in the FY ended March 1970, while net income fell from ¥3.1 billion in the FY ended March 1968 to ¥2.2 billion in the FY ended March 1970. In May 1970 he moved to Chairman, handing the presidency to Executive Vice President Eiichi Ohara.
