Background

He joined in April 1987 and came up through powertrain development, becoming an Operating Officer in April 2014, a Managing Officer in April 2018, Representative Director and President of Honda R&D in April 2019 and Senior Managing Director in June 2020. He became Representative Director, President and CEO in April 2021, and from April 2024 also served as Chair of the Board. He was a career employee with neither blood ties to the founding family nor a shareholding to back him.

Education: Hiroshima University, Graduate School of Engineering (1987)

Selection

In April 2021 he succeeded Takahiro Hachigo as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2021, just before, consolidated net sales were ¥13,170.5 billion, down from ¥14,931.0 billion the year before. Employees had also fallen from 218,674 to 211,374. An engineer who had developed engines declared, in the month he took office, that Honda would move away from engines by 2040.

Initiatives

In April 2021 he declared that by 2040 Honda would switch all the four-wheelers it sells worldwide to EVs and FCVs, with an interim target of 40% in 2030. In December 2021 production of finished automobiles at the Sayama plant ended and was consolidated into the Yorii plant. In December 2024 Honda reached a basic agreement to begin talks on a business integration with Nissan Motor, but the two could not agree over a proposal to make Nissan a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange, and the memorandum was terminated in February 2025. In March 2026, judging full EV conversion by 2040 to be difficult to achieve, he effectively revised the goal and booked ¥1.3 trillion in EV-related costs.
